Quick and easy vegan sausage gravy using just 5 ingredients and is ready in 15 minutes! A delicious vegan gravy for biscuits, grits, or breakfast potatoes!
What Is Vegan Sausage Gravy?
Traditionally, sausage gravy is a simple Southern comfort food classic made from breakfast sausage, butter, flour, milk, and simple seasonings. For this version, though, we’re ditching the meat and dairy for a delicious vegan sausage gravy—and no one will miss the meat or dairy!
On days when a light breakfast like a smoothie or fresh juice isn’t going to cut it, this vegan breakfast gravy is perfect for making Southern-style vegan biscuits and gravy as a hearty, comforting meal to keep you satisfied until lunch!
This quick and easy vegan gravy for biscuits requires just 5 simple, wholesome ingredients (plus salt and black pepper) and a fuss-free simple process. All you need to do is sauté the onion and vegan sausage, add the flour, and stir in the broth and seasonings until thickened.
Even better, this vegan breakfast gravy is naturally dairy-free and vegan but can also be made soy-free (based on the sausage you use) and gluten-free. You can enjoy it with breakfast, brunch, and even mains!
The Ingredients
This veggie sausage gravy recipe requires just a handful of ingredients, primarily kitchen staples, for an inexpensive meal you make at a moment’s notice (as long as you have vegan sausage).
- Bouillon cube: You’ll need one vegetarian bouillon cube with a cup of water. Use a reduced sodium cube or vegan stock, if preferred.
- Onion: I recommend using a yellow onion, though white onions or shallots will also work.
- Vegan sausage: Use any vegan sausage crumbles. I used Lightlife Gimme Lean sausages cut up into tiny balls, but other brands like Impossible (which is available in a tube) or Gardein would work.
With the right vegan sausage, you’d never even guess this white sausage gravy is vegan. So, feel free to experiment with different brands!
- Flour: I used regular all-purpose flour. Use a gluten-free blend like Bob’s Red Mill for gluten-free vegan sausage gravy.
- Oil: Use neutral cooking oil like vegetable oil, canola oil, etc.
- Seasoning: All this vegan breakfast gravy requires is salt and black pepper, added to taste.
What Else Could I Add to the Vegan White Gravy?
- Vegan butter: Add a tablespoon of melted vegan butter for a richer vegan white gravy.
- Dairy-free milk: For a creamier dairy-free sausage gravy, add some unsweetened dairy-free milk (or cream) instead of some of the water.
- Herbs: There are several types of herbs you could use to infuse the vegan breakfast gravy with more flavor. I.e., dried thyme, rosemary (or both), sage, etc. Add just a tiny pinch to begin and increase to taste. Fresh herbs like parsley would also work well.
- Smoked paprika: For a subtle color and smoky flavor. Add to taste.
- Nutritional yeast: For a savory, nutty, 'cheesy' flavor. Add a generous pinch and increase to taste.
- Garlic powder: For a subtle garlic flavor. Add to taste.
- Spice: If you want some heat in the veggie sausage gravy, add a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper. Alternatively, drizzle over some hot sauce when serving.
How to Make Vegan Sausage Gravy?
This vegetarian sausage gravy takes less than 15 minutes to prepare from start to finish and follows just 5 simple steps.
- 1) First, boil the water (with a kettle or microwave), add the bouillon cube, stir until fully dissolved, then set aside. Meanwhile, peel and dice the onion.
- 2) Then, add the vegetable oil to a small pot/pan over medium heat. Once hot, add the diced onion and vegan sausage. Sauté until the onions become tender and translucent, and the sausage is lightly browned.
- 3) Lower the heat to a gentle simmer and add the flour, stirring until you have a smooth roux.

FAQs
Yes, just use an all-purpose gluten-free flour blend instead of wheat flour, and also use gluten-free vegan sausage crumbles.
You could use another vegan sausage alternative, like ground tempeh sausage crumbles. Alternatively, for texture but a different flavor, use cauliflower rice or sauteed sliced mushrooms.
Top Recipe Tips and Notes
- If the gravy is too thick: I recommend adding the dairy-free milk of your choice, just a splash at a time, until you reach your desired consistency.
- For a lighter-colored gravy: Use less water and add non-dairy milk (cashew milk, oat milk, soy milk, etc.) instead.
- To avoid lumpy gravy: Slowly add in the veg broth, constantly whisking as you do.
How to Store Vegan Sausage Gravy?
Because of how quick and simple it is to prepare, I prefer to enjoy this vegan sausage gravy while it’s fresh and warm from the stovetop. However, if you have any leftovers:
Store: Allow the vegan white gravy to cool and store covered or in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Reheat: You can reheat the dairy-free sausage gravy on the stovetop or in a microwave. It will thicken when chilled, so add an extra splash or two of dairy-free milk or vegetable broth to bring it back to the correct consistency.
Can You Freeze Sausage Gravy?
You can freeze this veggie sausage gravy for 3 months in an airtight container or portion it into Ziplock/Stasher bags or a silicone muffin tray. Allow it to thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating it.
Serving Recommendations
This vegan sausage gravy is a perfect option for a hearty, comforting breakfast or brunch but can also be added to other dishes. Here are some of my favorite options:
- Serve it over your favorite vegan buttermilk biscuits or English muffins, optionally with a side of hash browns
- It will also work well over plain waffles or pancakes
- Pour it over vegan corn grits
- Serve the dairy-free sausage gravy over tofu scramble
- Enjoy the veggie sausage gravy with breakfast potatoes or tots
- Spoon it over creamy mashed potatoes
