Why You’ll Love This Recipe

There are few things I crave more on a warm summer day than an icy, refreshing treat like this fresh watermelon juice, sparkling pineapple strawberry mocktail, banana nectarine smoothie, OR, for ultra hydration, this child-approved, homemade fresh strawberry slushie – perfect for BBQs, gatherings, and poolside sipping.

Unlike store-bought slushies made with sugary, highly ‘artificial’ fruit-flavored syrups, this homemade slushie is made using just fresh fruit, lime, water, and an optional natural sweetener. It’s far healthier, has fewer calories, saves money, and is easy to make in minutes. Just throw it all in a blender and pulse to frosty perfection, bursting with strawberry flavor. You could even add herbs or extra fruit.

Recipe Variations

  • Berries: Replace some/all strawberries with blueberries, blackberries, or raspberries.
  • More fruit: Make tasty strawberry slush recipe combinations with other juicy fruits:
    • Strawberry watermelon slush
    • Peach strawberry slush
    • Strawberry kiwi slush
    • Strawberry pineapple slush
    • Strawberry mango slush
  • Vanilla: Just a touch of vanilla adds depth to the strawberry lime slush.
  • Strawberry cream slush: Add a few tablespoons of vegan yogurt or coconut cream.
  • Fresh herbs: i.e., mint or basil for extra aromatic depth.
  • Substitute the water: The best way to add flavor to a homemade slushie is to replace regular water ice with ice made from other ingredients, like:
    • Strawberry juice
    • Coconut water
    • Lemonade
    • Other fruit juices (pineapple, mango, peach, orange juice, etc.)

Step 1: First, wash the strawberries, remove the green stems, and zest and juice the lime/lemon. Transfer the strawberries, lemon/ lime zest and juice (from ½ the lemon/lime) to a high-powered blender. Blend until smooth. Taste and adjust the sweetness, if preferred.

Step 2: Add a cup of ice and pulse 5 times before adding the second cup and pulsing into a slushie consistency. Add more ice if needed. Taste and adjust the sugar and lime levels once more. Finally, serve the strawberry slush by scooping it into a glass or bowl – enjoy!

FAQs

Can I use frozen strawberries?

I tried it with frozen strawberries before, but they were pretty tasteless compared to ripe and juicy in-season berries, so I highly recommend the latter when possible. If using frozen berries, make sure they’re high quality.

Is a homemade strawberry lemon slush healthy?

Yes! Gas station Slurpee’s are often loaded with sugar, chemicals, and preservatives. In comparison, this homemade strawberry lemon slushie is made with just three ingredients: strawberries, lime, and ice with optional sweetener.

With strawberries and water as the key ingredients, not only is this strawberry slushy recipe incredibly refreshing, but the berries add fiber, micronutrients, and antioxidants, too. These include vitamin C, manganese, potassium, folate, copper, and more. Looking for another immune-boosting drink? Try out this immunity boosting juice.

Pro Recipe Tips

  • Adjust the sweetness: Taste the mixture as you go, adding any extra sweetness (as berries can be quite tart) and lime to preference.
  • To adjust the consistency: If it’s too thin, add more ice. If it is too thick, blend more or add a touch of extra liquid.

Storage Instructions

Enjoy the frozen strawberry slushie quickly before the ice melts and dilutes the flavor.

Alternatively, freeze leftovers in a large ice cube tray for 2-3 months.
