Why You'll Love Air Fryer Sweet Potato Wedges

When you can make these quick and easy sweet potato wedges in an air fryer with just a few minutes of prep, simple ingredients, and only 1 ½ tbsps of oil in the whole batch, there's really no reason to resist. They're crispy, flavor-packed, and family-friendly!

Thanks to a little starch, a splash of oil, and pure air fryer magic, you'll achieve air-fried sweet potato wedges with perfectly tender insides and a lightly caramelized, crunchy exterior. Combine their natural sweetness with a savory, slightly spicy seasoning for a simple everyday snack or side so good, you'll actually want to make every day.

The Ingredients

Ingredients for Air fryer Sweet Potato Wedges measured out on a white surface.
  • Starch: Use potato starch/cornstarch (tapioca starch should also work).

Seasoning Variations

Like regular fries, there are endless ways to season sweet potato air fryer wedges, including:

  • Onion powder
  • Ground cumin
  • Nutritional yeast
  • Dried herbs (thyme, rosemary, oregano, Italian seasoning, etc.)
  • Red pepper flakes
  • Seasoning blend (Cajun, taco, ranch, curry powder, pumpkin spice, Old Bay)
  • Sweet (Brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt)
  • To garnish (like fresh parsley, lemon/lime, or vegan Parmesan cheese)

How to Make Air Fryer Sweet Potato Wedges

Step 1: First, optionally peel, then cut the sweet potatoes into wedges. Also, preheat the air fryer to 400°F/200°C. Toss them in a bowl with the oil, starch, and seasonings until evenly coated.

Step 2: Spread the wedges in a single layer in the air fryer basket, with a little space between (for airflow). Cook in batches if needed.

To cut potato wedges: Cut the potato in half lengthwise, then cut at an angle towards the center every ¼ inch apart, or as thick as you like. Alternatively, cut the halves in half another 2 times for 8 wedges.

Step 3: Air fry for 18-20 minutes, shaking every 5 minutes for even crispiness. When ready, they're tender inside with golden, crisp edges. Remove and serve immediately. Enjoy!

Depending on the fry/wedge thickness, the time will vary. Monitor and adjust.

FAQs

Do I have to use oil?

I don't recommend omitting it, as sweet potato wedges generally aren't as crispy as regular wedges, so the oil and starch both work together for the crispiest results.

Can I make thinner air fryer sweet potato fries?

Sure - just reduce the cooking time accordingly.

Can I prepare sweet potato wedges in advance?

You can store chopped raw wedges in a large bowl of water (to prevent oxidation) for up to 24 hours. Drain, pat dry, and toss with oil and seasonings before cooking.

Technically, you can freeze them, but blanch them for 2-3 minutes first. Transfer to ice water, dry thoroughly, and freeze for up to 6 months. Then, air fry from frozen, adding a few minutes.

Are air fryer sweet potato fries healthy?

Not only does air frying sweet potato wedges mean you can use a fraction of the oil, but sweet potatoes are lower GI than regular potatoes and naturally rich in several vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants (including Vitamin A and potassium).

Top tip: Keep the skin on for maximum nutrients and fiber.

Pro Recipe Tips

  • Cut the wedges evenly: To ensure they cook evenly. I aim for about ½ inch.
  • Don't omit the oil or starch: Sweet potatoes need it for the crispiest edges.
  • For the crispiest wedges: Optionally soak the cut wedges for 30-40 minutes to draw out excess starch before patting dry, seasoning, and cooking.
  • Adjust the size: You can cut thinner fries or thicker wedges and adjust the cooking time accordingly.
  • Don't overcrowd: Spread in a single layer, with space between to ensure airflow, for the crispiest sweet potato wedges. Cook in batches if needed.
  • If cooking in batches: Pop earlier batches back in at the end (stacking is fine at this point) for a few minutes to reheat.

Serving Suggestions

You can enjoy air-fried sweet potato wedges as a snack with your favorite dip (ketchup, vegan mayo, aioli, BBQ sauce, hummus, avocado cream, etc.), or as a side alongside:

  • Sandwiches, burgers & wraps (vegan hummus wraps, a vegan BLT, or a vegan smashed chickpea sandwiches)
  • Tacos (like black bean tacos with veggies), vegan quesadillas/homemade vegan crunchwraps, and burritos
  • Vegan elote (Mexican street corn)
  • Bean chili
  • Vegan 7-layer dip
  • Alongside a vegan Just Egg quiche or vegan Just Egg omelette
  • In bowl meals (Like grain bowls/salad bowls - like my roasted beetroot and sweet potato salad or alongside taco pasta salad)

Storage Instructions

Store: Sweet potato wedges are best enjoyed immediately for the best texture. However, leftovers will store in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-5 days.

Freeze: Flash freeze on a tray, not touching, until solid, then move to a Ziplock/Stasher for up to 3 months.

Reheat: Air fry the sweet potato wedges at 375°F/190°C for 6-10 minutes, shaking halfway. Avoid the microwave, as it will turn them limp.

You can also load them up with your favorite toppings, like vegan nacho cheese, bean chili, guacamole, corn, salsa, etc.
