What is Golden Milk?
Also called Turmeric Milk, Turmeric Latte, or “haldi doodh”, this traditional Ayurvedic drink from India is becoming more and more popular because of its healing and calming properties. It is a combination of milk, and spices- specifically turmeric and ginger which give it its warm, golden color.
Turmeric contains curcumin while ginger has gingerol, both are powerful compounds that possess potent antioxidants and amazing anti-inflammatory effects. These are shown to help boost our immune system, relieve pain, and prevent diseases and infections. Studies also show that these have a positive effect on our brain and heart functions. You get all that in a cup of blended drink - how amazing is that?
The Best Vegan Golden Milk Recipe Ever!
You only need 5 minutes, 7 ingredients, and a pot to make this at home! The ingredients are so pantry-basic you’ll be rearing to try this healthy drink once you find out how simple it is to make.
To keep this drink as naturally healthy as possible, we opted out of using refined sugar and artificial sweeteners. Instead, we used Impact’s, a zero-calorie substitute that looks, feels, and tastes like sugar without all the negative effects. It is a healthier and tastier option to add sweetness to your diet. Plus, they use a plant-based and compostable pouch, which is better for our planet!
Ingredients Needed
- Plant-based milk - you can use coconut, soy or almond milk for this recipe.
- Sweetener - use Impact's for the best results! This is not only ideal for adding to your drinks but can also be used for sprinkling, dipping, and cooking. Just replace 1 cup of sugar with 1 cup of monk fruit blend.
- Ground turmeric - you can also use fresh turmeric or turmeric extract if that is what you have.
- Ground ginger - this adds a zingy flavor to the drink. You can also use fresh ginger.
- Vanilla extract - gives the drink a pleasant flavor and aroma.
- Ground cinnamon - for that warm, earthy flavor! Do you know that cinnamon also contains cinnamaldehyde? This is also a great compound that helps reduce inflammation, lower blood sugar and reduce heart disease. You can also use cinnamon sticks or replace this with nutmeg or allspice.
- Pinch of black pepper - this is a vital element in making the golden drink because it will allow our body to absorb the curcumin better.
How to Make Golden Milk
Step 1. Place all the ingredients in a small pot and let it simmer over medium-low heat for 5 minutes. Make sure to stir regularly to prevent clumps from forming.
Step 2. Once the plant-based milk mixture is hot but not yet boiling, remove from heat and transfer it to mugs. Let it cool down for a minute and then you may serve and enjoy!
